about

This is my 4th album of 2020 and features the sounds of Humpback and Beluga Whales along with my winds - Cylisax and 'Crow'.

Since 2008 I have been working with the sounds of endangered species, creating music by playing the samples of their calls on a midi wind controller - a digital wind instrument called a WX5 (re-named by me as 'Lyrebird'). These sounds cry out to us in perhaps a more immediate and emotive way than words can describe. They are a cry from the animals that share and have shared this planet with us.

The initial project using these endangered calls was a solo performance called 'The Extinction Room' where I played and live-looped the sounds of endangered & extinct animals to an audience wearing blindfolds and headphones. Later in 2012 I created a work for 4 singers and 4 percussionists triggering the sounds of endangered species called 'The Dream of Zedkat Nabu' which premiered at The Woodford Folk Festival. In 2015 I began a wonderful collaboration with singer Lizzie O'Keefe - a project called 'Dangerous Song' where Lizzie joins me weaving her voice in and out of the musical landscape of animal sounds.

On this album I have focussed on Whale sounds because I love the incredible beauty and diversity of their calls and the fact that these samples come from complex extended Songs that the Humpbacks themselves are singing. Most of the Humpback samples come from recordings made by Mark Franklin. This is the result of years of recording, listening and editing the hundreds of hours of recordings. So a massive THANKYOU to Mark, Wally and Trish Franklin for their years of work.

Another reason for focussing on Humpback Whale Song in particular is that in this current 6th Extinction crisis that we humans have created we need to hold tightly onto the good news stories, and in fact the situation of Humpback Whales is currently improving in spite of the overall trend of global species extinction.
