Track 4 - 4th of April (Cylisax & Tasmanian Devil)
This track features the Cylisax which is a relatively new instrument design of mine. It sounds like a mellow soprano sax but has a cylindrical bore with a branch tube that changes the physics of the sound waves it generates (it was inspired by Yamaha’s ‘Venova’. This one is a Mk9 model and I’ve turned it from the Australian timber Budgeroo (Lysicarpus angustifolius). I've multitracked 4 Cylisax lines and all the percussion tracks are created with the sounds of the Tasmanian Devil and the bassline and kik drum are made from the sound of the Black Drum Fish (played with my midi wind controller – “Lyrebird / WX5”). This piece came out of nowhere. When I walked into the studio to write and record it, I was thinking it would be a slow groove using Humpback and Beluga Whale sounds ....but something else sprung into being.
